Current ProductionFall Play: The Dining Room, by A.R. Gurney
Directed by Suzanne Irving, this play contains 18 vignettes about people from the 1930s to modern day. All the people have in common, is that they are seen in a dining room. The set is deliberately vague and minimal, so that the action, costumes, and mannerisms carry the audience from one era to the next. The cast includes veterans Hugh Stewart, Dirk Visbach, and Sophie Hall, and welcomes Phil Irving, Lynn Jolicoeur, and Krysta Hinds. Past patrons of KPI productions may remember the last time Suzanne directed a play by the same author, A.R. Gurney, with KPI's 2002 endearing and successful production of "Sylvia". That play focused on a dog (played with abondon by Brenda Reinkeluers) who affected the lives of a man in mid-life crisis (Tom Beach) and his upwardly aspiring wife (Diane Miller). This time, Suzanne directs the cast of three men and three women into the 45 different roles within the multiple vignettes. Each actor and actress takes on various roles, marked only by simple costume changes and overt mannerisms. The part called "Man 1" for instance walks off stage right as a rowdy 12 year old boy at a kid's party, and immediately returns as an 80 year old grandfather, being pestered for money by his grandson. Although challenging for the cast, the audience gets many cues to help them keep up, including lighting effects which by turns show the french patio doors downstage and the evening glow through the side windows. Rehearsals are in full swing as we count down the weeks to the fall performances. Please watch this space for futher updates. Current Production
